Minister of Shipping G K Vasan lays foundation stone of JNPT’s 330 meter standalone Container Terminal Project

Mumbai, March 5, 2014: Union Minister of Shipping Shri G.K.Vasan today laid the foundation stone of 330 meter stand-alone Container Terminal of Project of India’s largest container handling port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) awarded to Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal Pvt. Ltd. The Minister also awarded the mega project of development of Fourth Container Terminal at JN Port on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis to M/S PSA Bharat Investments Pte. Ltd and launched the software project for software development and ERP awarded to M/s CMC Ltd. JNPT had signed the agreement with Dubai-based DP World’s Indian subsidiary Nhava Sheva(India) Gateway Terminal Pvt. Ltd.(NSIGI) for development of a standalone container handling facility at the port in Navi Mumbai at an estimated cost of Rs. 600 crores.

The concession agreement entails the development of Standalone Container Handling Facility with a quay length of 330 metres at JN Port, Sheva, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Under the agreement, the terminal will be developed by NSIGT at an estimated cost of Rs. 600 crores, with an estimated capacity addition of 0.8 Million TEUs per annum.

“In India, container volumes are expected to witness an exponential growth. Container terminals at major ports help in furthering international trade. Building new container terminals will help meet the growing global demand,” said Mr Vasan.

The project would be executed on DBFOT (Design, Built, Finance Operate and Transfer) basis, and is slated to be completed by December 2015.

As per the PPP policy of Government of India, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust floated a global tender and DP World was the successful bidder for the project, with their offer of 28.9% revenue share to the port. DP World has formed a special purpose vehicle namely Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal Pvt. Ltd. to implement this project.
“We are very delighted that the foundation stone has been laid for 330 meter stand-alone Container Terminal Project along with the award of mega project of development of Fourth Container Terminal at JN Port to PSA Bharat Investments Pte. Ltd and launch of software development and ERP project,” said Mr N N Kumar, Chairman, JNPT.

Minister of State for Shipping,IT & Communications Shri Milind Deora graced the occasion.

The project for development of 4th Container Terminal at JN Port with a quay length of 2000 metres and a capacity of 4.8 million TEUs per annum at an estimated project cost of Rs.7915 crores was bid out by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust through a global tender and PSA was successful bidder for the project with the offer of 35.79% revenue shared to the port. It was envisaged from various studies that the Port would be required to handle container traffic to the tune of 10 million TEUs by year 2018-19.

The Board of Trustees of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, in its meeting held on February 26, 2014 accepted the offer of PSA and the Letter of Award (LOA) was issued to them on the same day. A License Agreement will be signed within one month from the date of issue of the LOA. With this capacity addition JNPT will be able to handle 10 million TEUs and place itself in ten biggest global container ports.

Hon’ble Minister of Shipping, Shri G K Vasan and Minister of State for Communications,IT & Shipping, Shri Milind Deora congratulated Chairman ,JNPT, its Officers and employees for achieving this target and bringing the difficult task to a reality.

The Project of “Software Development, and ERP was awarded to M/s CMC Limited at a project cost of over Rs 29 crores. It aims at automating the Library and Workflow Management including Document Management, with a Centralised User Management & Single Sign On. Further, the project will also upgrade the existing IT infrastructure along with building necessary Data Network redundancy for a reliable, robust and agile IT Infrastructure to cater to the growth of the Enterprise.

JNPT is the biggest container handling Port in India, handling around 56% of the country’s containerized cargo, first crossing the historic landmark of 4 million TEUs in container throughput in the year 2007-08. The port is currently ranked 31st among the top 100 Container Ports in the world.
