Chennai Port Trust Annual Meet 2017-18

Chennai Port Trust Annual Press Meet was held at Chennai, by its Chairman, Mr. P Raveendran and the Dy. Chairman Mr. Cyril C George, accompanied by Mr. Mohan, Secretary and Mr. Chidambaranathan , Asst. Director PIB.

Mr. Raveendran, Chennai Port Trust Chairman on his detailed report said despite sluggish growth in global trade, the cargo volume handled at Chennai port during the financial year 2017-18 was at 51.88 Million MTs as against 50.21 MMTs done last year. And, the net surplus is expected to be about Rs.32 crores compared to 13 Crores last year.

The volume also stood at 3Million metric tons, a 6% up in the growth compared to last year, whereas the target was set at 48.88 Million MTs only. Container traffic accounted for 30M tons (MMTs) and the petroleum product for 13.5M tons out of 51.8 Million MTs.

When the TEU units for the year ended at 2018 increased from 14,94,831 to 15,49,457 TEUs, an increase of 3.65% YoY, handling of Raw Sugar, POL Products, Minerals like Gypsum & Barytes saw a significant increase.

The operating surplus for the year 2017-18 was at Rs. 225.50 crores as against 217 last year, registering 3.82% increase, which was achieved by exercising tight control on operational expenses.

The port was awarded, ‘BEST TOURIST FRIENDLY HARBOR‘, by the Tamil Nadu Tourism, based on the State of Art Cruise facilities available in CPT and in recognition of the efforts taken by the port to encourage tourism through cruise vessels.

PT poised to provide Multi Modal Logistics part and a Maritime Cluster near Chennai is being considered as it has potential for Steel, Petro chemicals, electronics & ship building industry.

As part of Green Port initiatives, it has acquired equipment / gadgets for continuous monitoring of environmental parameters, dust suppression system and taken up plantation initiatives to provide green cover. Digital display boards have also been mounted to show the data on this.

Coastal movements of containers between Chennai & Puducherry ports also just commenced.
